Finances

Master’s funding

  • Student Finance for PGRs: Most Masters students fund their tution cost through student finance loans. Check out their webpage to see what funding is available.
  • University bursaries: Many universities offer bursaries or discounts for students continuing their studies at the same institution. These can reduce tuition fees or help with living costs. To see what’s available, check your university’s website,  especially the finance, scholarships, and postgraduate funding pages.

PhD funding

You can often apply for a funded PhD, which typically covers tuition fees and provides a living stipend. Funding is usually offered by UKRI research councils or directly by universities, and many students also earn additional income through teaching assistant roles. Each PhD programme offers different financial support, with some including funding for lab‑based research (bench fees) or conference attendance. Websites like FindAPhD.com break down individual programmes, including their costs and available funding. If you are self‑funding, you can apply for a Doctoral Loan, though fully funded places are generally considered the better option.
