NNECL welcomes the wide-reaching recommendations of the Independent Review of Children’s Social Care in England.  In particular, we are pleased to see the ambition to double the numbers of care experienced people participating in higher education and the recognition of our Quality Mark for universities and colleges to improve the support they provide.  We want to see all care experienced students getting the support they need to succeed in higher education and are keen to explore these areas further with the Department for Education, Office for Students and others.

We also welcome the recommendation for care experience to become a protected characteristic.  If implemented, this would play a big part in addressing the disadvantages faced by care experienced people and in improving data and understanding about these issues.
