I started my degree when I was 24 years old with two kids aged 2 and 1 year old. I am a single mum and I felt it was important to become the best version of myself and give my children the best future by returning to education and having a career.
I started studying a foundation degree in social work and alongside my university degree I obtained my level 2 functioning maths. Although university can be challenging there is help out there for learning and emotional support. I feel that university has expanded my knowledge and skills for job prospects, my network and I can't wait to graduate in December 2022.
I think every care leaver should attend university when they feel ready. I did not feel ready at 18, but I felt ready at 24 - despite being a single mum to two children, I have never failed a module. I have always got a mark in the assessments between A-C.
I am extremely proud of myself and I think Local Authorities should support young people with preparing them for the reality of university life and the commitment of becoming a university student.
